Photo tour led by Carl Ottersen

in partnership with Vickar Adam

Sister island to Bali, Lombok has its own special magic as it blends the culture of Bali with more ancient customs and rites, which have mixed themselves into both Hinduism and Islam. The island is a marvel of nature, not least the great volcano Rinjani. This is a full island tour, from north to south and across its middle. One of my favorite islands.

Companions

Of course you can bring your companion with you! With our local partners we have created a number of interesting and rewarding activities for them to fully enjoy the time too.

Weather

This is the dry season so, though it does rain from time to time. In the plains it is hot, but up high, as we will be, it is very cold at night, even close to freezing, so bring a mix of clothes.

Difficulty

Energetic but not mountain climbing. You do have to be in reasonable health, capable of one hour hikes up hills. Do bring good walking shoes.

Tour Program

Touring Lombok is ideal for the photographer, with the light and shadow playing off hills, trees, stone buildings and the eternally present sea. These five days are much about stopping to photograph the natural scenery and local life as it is to see the places mentioned. You will learn and practice several photographic techniques: composition, street photography, unusual angles, portraits, film/shutter/aperture combinations, depth of field, using light and many others. Photo skills will be reviewed "as-you-go" and also at the end of the day so you get the best from these opportunities. At the end of the day you will also have something to see and enjoy, always with photography in mind.

Settling in • Kuta

Everyone is going to arrive at different times, so this is a very relaxed day, for settling in and getting to meet each other. You may arrive by air or by sea; we will pick you up and bring you to the hotel. Anyone coming in early can go down to Kuta's golden beaches to relax and enjoy the extra time. Before having a lovely dinner we will have an orientation session.

Day One • South

The southern part of Lombok is renowned for its natural beauty, so that is what we do today, as well as visiting a couple of the traditional Sasak villages in the area. Later on we will do some portrait fotos in natural light before hitting the beach area to capture some wonderful sunsets.

Day Two • Center

With a very early start we head off to the center of Lombok, to visit some of its older and more traditional places: Pura Lingsar, the Narmada Water Garden, the Bertais market, Tetebatu and Pringgasela. This means some walks through the foothills of mighty Rinjani to enjoy the sight and freshness of local waterfalls. Absolutely worn out, we return to the splendors of the hotel in Kuta and the caress of soft ocean breezes.

Day Three • East

We get up in the dark, because I want you to see the dawn as it rises over Sumbawa, the long and wild island to the east of Lombok. This means heading to Tanjung Aan and Sekaroh, where the beaches are pink thanks to the broken coral and shells. We do a little island hopping here, to shoot fotos of their natural beauty, set in a crystal clear sea. Lots of photo sessions here! Later in the day we head up to Tanjung Luar and Labuan Lombok, which is the port facing Sumbawa. Here we stay the night so you can experiment with night photography.

Day Four • North

After an early morning walk up down to the old harbor to shoot the scenes there, we head around the coast to the north of the island, which has not been developed by tourism. Here we will cut in to the slopes of Rinjani, to see the village of Sembalun, the old mosque at Bayan Beleq, the waterfalls at Sendang Gila and the village of Senaru, where we will stay overnight.

Day Five • West

We carry on around the coast, passing the ferry port for the Gili Islands (you can always go on to these tourist islands after the tour) and on to Pemengang to see the pearl farm, a paradise beach empty but for its fishing boats, Batu Bolong with its Hindu temple and Sengiggi, a picturesque resort town where we stay the night. Well before the sun goes down we will stop by Malimbu, which is a great place to enjoy the sunset over Bali. Night photography in Sengiggi!

Add three days and climb to the top of Rinjani!

From the village of Senaru it takes a day to climb to the top of Rinjani, the mighty volcano that towers over Lombok. Camping over night you can not only see the views from it summit, but also go down to the lake that lies in the heart of the great crater. One day and another night takes us back to the village again. Amazing, stunning, unforgettable. To do only if you are fit.
